Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on my first visit?

When you arrive for your First appointment we will greet you with your dog and we will ask you to complete a short registration form.

This includes your contact details, your pet’s history, health and behaviour, veterinarian details, together with our terms and conditions.

You can download a copy of the registration form here, should you wish to complete it prior to your first appointment.

We will then examine your dog and discuss it’s grooming requirements with you.

Once grooming needs have been agreed we will inform you of the price and give you a pick up time.

I think my dog just needs a bath?

We can book your dog in for a bath only.

Take a look at our Wash & Go or Bath & Tidy Services for examples.

We do recommend some breeds book alternate groom / baths to keep the coat in condition and to limit issues such as matting.
So for dogs that we regulary groom we can offer an intermediate Maintenance Groom

My dog can’t see out of his eyes, can he just have a small trim?

Of course.
Just let us know when you call to book.

We can offer a quick suitable service

Can I bring some treats for my dog?

Yes, of course.

We often give treats to the dogs with your permission.

We strongly encourage owners to bring treats to reward their dog.

If it will make an anxious dog feel more relaxed, then you are also welcome to bring one of your dog’s favourite toys or perhaps a small blanket.

How regularly should we have our dog groomed?

Your dog will need to be groomed regularly.

It is difficult to answer how often without knowing the breed and many other factors.

Please give us a call, with a little more information we will be able to give you some idea.

We will discuss future grooming at your first appointment.

Should I bath my dog? I have heard it washes out the natural oils

If you use a good quality dog shampoo you can bath as often as once a week if you feel it is required.

When you visit, please ask. We can give you more specific advice, relevant to your dog.

What if I need to cancel my appointment?

Please call us to cancel and re-schedule as soon as possible.

We understand, the unforeseen happens to us all at some time.

Please remember;
All of our bookings are by appointment only,
It can be difficult to fill the unused appointment at short notice.

Can I leave my dog with you all day?

We do try to avoid having too many dogs on the premises at one time to maintain the nice calm enviroment, that is so very important whilst grooming.

We can keep your dog for a short while beyond the appointment time, but we do not have the space or facilities suitable for longer periods.

My dog is in season, will you still groom her?

If you already have an appointment, then please ring us and let us know so we can ensure that there are no male dogs booked in at the same time.

If you have not yet booked, it would be best to wait until the season has ended.

How long does the grooming take?

This depends on several variable factors:
the individual dog’s;

  • Coat Type,
  • Coat Condition,
  • Breed,
  • Temperament,
  • Style,
  • Age,

We would discuss all this during your first appointment and subsequently as and when required.
Our mission is the welfare of your dog and ensuring they have an enjoyable experience.

We always give an approximate collect time when you leave your dog with us.

We have a new puppy, When should grooming start?

It is important for your dogs health that all inoculations have been completed.

As with everything new to them, the younger and earlier a puppy is gently introduced to new sights, sounds and smells the more confident they become, resulting in a much better grooming experience for them.

Our Puppy Introduction service offers a completely free introductory visit, followed by discounted appointments for the dogs first year.
Your puppy is initially introduced to the salon and staff, allowed a good sniff about, introduced to the grooming table, where they get a quick fun brush, lots of cuddles and (with your permission) a treat.

My dog is aggresive with other dogs, will you still groom?

It is important that you tell us about your dogs behaviour.

We are very happy to try and work with aggressive dogs.
As we opperate by appointment only, dogs are groomed promptly, allowing them to be picked up within a few hours, reducing any anxiety.

Many dogs that once showed signs of anxiety, now come in with a waggy tail.

If you let us know we will ensure that your dog is the only one in the parlour and enjoys a relaxed visit.

My dog is very timid or nervous, will you still groom?

It is important that you tell us about your dogs behaviour.

We are very happy to try and work with nervous dogs.

Do you muzzle the dogs?

As dog lovers we prefer to build up a trust between Dog and Groomer.

For the safety of both the dog and groomer and only as a last resort for dogs that do show signs of aggression such as snarling or biting/licking at the clippers or scissors will be temporarily muzzled.

This would be for the shortest period possible.

If we felt that muzzling your dog was required, we would discuss this with you.

Does the groom include nail trimming?

Yes, we always look at the nails and treat accordingly.

You can read more about the various grooms and treatments we offer.

Sometimes dogs can become anxious or stressed when having their nails trimmed.
On these occasions firstly we advise returning another day.
However some dogs are best having their nails trimmed by the vet.

My dog only needs his nails trimming, can I just come in?

Nail trimming is a reasonably quick procedure, meaning in most cases you can wait with your dog.

If you book an appointment for just a nail trim, you can hopefully be on your way in just a few minutes.
This is preferred as it is better for us, you and your dog.

We will see you as soon as possible, but you may have to wait until we have finished grooming our current client.

However as it is a reasonably quick procedure, you can arrive without an appointment.

We would always recommend phoning us first to avoid any unnecessary delay or disappointment.

On very busy days, with regret, we may be unable to carry out the trimming without an appointment.

I think my dog may have fleas, will you still groom?

It is important that you tell us about your dogs condition.

We will still accept dogs that have fleas.

It is vital we ensure that other dogs in our care will not get fleas.
We may ensure your dog is the only dog in the salon at the appointment time.

Your dog can be washed with a flea deterrent shampoo that will kill all fleas on the dog.
We would only use a flea shampoo with your permission, making sure you dog is not exposed to too many chemicals if they have just been treated by your vets.

If we find fleas on your dog that you had not advised us of, there may be an additional fee for treatment.

Can I stay with my dog?

For an improved experience for your dog and of course their safety it is imperetive we have their complete attention.

Most dogs are distracted by their owners presence and will behave so much better without their owners being with them.

We do have outside seating for the warmer days and we are situated in a very rural position should you fancy a short stroll rather than “going away”

Nearby Symondsbury now has a thriving café and an eclectic range of artisan units which is a lovely way to fill the time whilst you wait for your dog to be groomed.

If your dog gets separation anxiety and you believe they would be calmer with you staying, then YES of course you could, please let us know.
We much prefer to groom a calm, happy dog!

If you have any concerns, you are more than welcome to have a good look around our salon.
We also have good viewing from outside should you wish to watch us.

I have a very large dog, is this a problem?

We have not yet refused a dog for being too big.

Most dogs would fit comfortably in our bathing area.

If your dog is sized that of a German Shepherd or smaller there should be no issues.

If you have a dog that is larger still, then perhaps consider giving us a call first, we could arrange for you to just pop in before booking an appointment.

Does a groom include emptying anal glands?

Sorry, we do not provide this service.

A healthy dog should empty it’s anal glands naturally.

If your dog has issues with it’s anal glands we strongly advise you to seek a vet’s advice.
Vet’s are qualified to properly diagnose and medicate where appropriate.
They should also be able to show you how to properly perform the procedure on your dog.

Do you have relevant insurance?

Yes we do.

We hold a Public liability Insurance policy.

As the details of this can change from time to time, please just ask us if you require further information.

What if my dog needs to pee or messes in your care?

We encourage you to take your dog for a walk before bringing them in to be groomed.
A full groom often takes two hours so it’s important they are as comfortable as possible.

If your dog has been able to toilet before it’s appointment this is unlikely.

Dogs that do show signs of needing to pee are taken outside to do so.

In the unlikely event your dog toilets indoors due to anxiety, stress or excitement, we would clean it up.
No harm is done.

If your dog is becoming that upset, we would stop any treatment as soon as possible.

You would be informed upon collection.

Your dog will still have received plenty of cuddles and reassurance.

Will you give my dog food and water?

Water is always available for the dogs in the salon.

We always ask your permission to give your dog a small treat.
Some dogs are on strict diets or suffer allergies and therefore may not be allowed treats.

We do not feed dogs any meals unless specifically asked to do so for health reasons.

What happens if my dog is taken ill in your care?

We have attended a Pet First Aid course.

If appropriate and required we would without hesitation take your dog to the vet for treatment.

We are registered with and highly recommend Bredy Veterinary Centre and Haydon Veterinary Centre.

We would try to keep to your own vet if at all possible at the time.
At your first appointment you supplied us with details for yourself and your dogs vet.

We would immediately contact you at the first opportunity, depending on the circumstances this may be before or after seeking vetinary help.
